Oooooo, S-H-I-N-Y

It's that time again. My car, whom I used to love dearly, is dying a slow death. The engine is once again losing compression (girl translation: when you push down the accelerator, it won't go fast) and after replacing several gaskets and a radiator last year I can't justify sinking more money in it. Besides, it's almost paid off which is simply a guarantee that something much more expensive is about to break.

It's time to start doing my homework. I usually pick a few models that I like and do the research into safety, reliability, etc. until I narrow it down to the best choice for the price. Then I start perusing the dealerships for a replacement. This sounds like a very intelligent process. But it all goes out the window when I see something like this:

It doesn't happen at every dealership but eventually it does...and that's when I know I've found my dream car. I call it the "ooooo, shiny" syndrome. I know the minute it hits because I lose control of the ability to distinguish between what I want and what I need. The drool starts to string out the corner of my open mouth. My eyes glaze over and all the blood rushes from my head. I don't know where it goes but I'm pretty sure, if I was a guy, I'd have a woody. This is an instant hit with the salespeople because they know the only words I can utter are "where do I sign?" and "trade-in? Oh, just take it". This is actually how I ended up with my current vehicle. All it takes to seal the deal is a split-second sight of myself behind the wheel. Ever wonder why dealerships have mirrored windows? It's for suckers like me.

You gotta admit, she's sharp. A 6.1L Hemi V8 with 425 horsepower....whoa, I need to go lie down....the blood just rushed from my head again.

Jackt - I LOVE cars. All types of cars. I need to take you shopping with me...I hate negotiating...any tips you can pass along are appreciated.

SJ - Remind me not to take you shopping for cars. We'd end up trading my house for a yellow Lamborghini.

JD - So THAT's what it feels like. Yes, well....you know with my commute being what it is gas mileage should be a concern ;) but hearing that Hemi roar....mmmmmmmm

buddman - why thank you ;) and thanks for stopping by.

steady angie....steady girl. you don't wanna have an attack of the "shinies". take a deep breath and try and do the homework. i understand the feelings.....just went through it and we got ourselves a little hyundai accent. the fuel economy is fantastic, way more than the hemi would do. and it is pretty peppy for an economy size car. i love cars too.

great post. happy hunting!

That's a beauty. I can definitely see you in that one. Go for it, but you gotta drive it over to Texas to see me!

Poet - I know...I need to take someone with me that has a level head. The Hyundai's actually have a very good record so I think you got yourself a pretty reliable car.

Christian - Why do I get the feeling you're just after my Hemi? ;)

Rick - Oooo, that'd be a nice drive....although the thought of doing that REALLY makes me want a convertible. I may be coming to Dallas in August for business. I'm waiting for work to make a decision. pffft, budgets!

I love it Angie! I am trying to resist the urge to buy a red Hummer H3 which would be INSANE with gas what it is. I had better just stick to hunting for my Pink Pacer.
Let us know how the car buying goes...

Cakes - Yeah, but just think how much safer Maddie would be in that Hummer vs. the Pacer. Do you see how I can talk myself into anything? It's an amazing talent, no?

I'm addicted to 1950's cars...and 1960's muscle cars..Fast cars...

(And Bonus - I'm jeterosexual and very cute too! Hehe...Not too many of us out there, eh Ang?)

RG - I grew up in a triangle between Indianapolis, Eldora and KilKare (a name your dad probably knows). I think that has something to do with my fascination.

Ok, I have to ask....what is jeterosexual????? Neither Wiki or the Urban Dictionary had it listed yet. I have a thought but I like to be sure about these things.

Grant - Porsche...yeah, right. I'll be lucky if I don't end up with a cardboard box with wheels.

Poet - Don't worry, hon. I'm in safe hands. I've already been told that once I narrow it down I'm being escorted to the dealership. What are friends for? Hhhmmphr :(

Angie, one thing I would highly recommend is doing your homework. Get independent assessments from consumer magazines (you can find such articles from the Readers Guide to Periodical Literature, or by perusing a years worth of "Motor Trend" or "Car and Driver."

If you want to buy a used car, check Carfax before you do anything (www.carfax.com), check Kelly's Blue Book for estimates of what you should pay (www.kbb.com), and have the vehicle checked out by a local mechanic.
