Summertime

I love summer but I think no one enjoys it more than kids. It's a shame as adults we get bogged down with the responsibilities of life and can't take time to enjoy it like we did back then.

I remember……
  1. the last day of school
  2. turning over rocks to see what lives beneath
  3. picking up the grossest thing underneath the rock and chasing the nerdy neighbor kid with it.
  4. playing wiffle ball using cardboard and paper plates as bases
  5. sitting on the sidewalk watching a bug and being amazed by it
  6. catching lightning bugs in glass jars
  7. riding bikes until we got tired
  8. realizing we had to ride ALL the way back home
  9. kool-aid moustaches
  10. lying in the grass searching the clouds for one that resembled something
  11. sneaking out of bed to stare at the stars
  12. reading Stephen King novels by flashlight under the covers to avoid being detected (Ok, that was probably just me)
  13. camping out in the backyard
  14. “Mom, he’s TOUCHING me!”
  15. Being “it”
  16. Picking up foul balls at the baseball diamond and turning them in for a piece of Super Bubble greeen apple gum
  17. sparklers
  18. "Mom, he's doing it AGAIN!"
  19. when staying up late meant 10 p.m.
  20. homemade ice cream

We never could figure out why our lightning bug jars were empty the next morning lol...I think my mom let them go after we went to bed...

We used to ride our bikes like crazy, and then do a giant pixie stix for energy (sugar buzz!!) lol....then do the "Nestea Plunge" and fall in our pool to cool off....

Those were the days!!

Awww such a sweet poignant post Angie. I remember alot of those too.
You left out "Mo-o-o-om he's LOOKING at me!" LOL My brother was the BIGGEST pain (still is).

In PA the pools didn't open until after Memorial Day down here in the south you can swim in February sometimes. As a kid that would have totally boggled my mind!

Rick - Count your blessings. I had a hose and a piece of plastic.

Cakes - Mine too. He still does the "I'm not touching you.." thing.

I know what you mean about the pool. The first year I moved here I wore shorts at Christmas and thought "this is soooo cool!"

Being an adult doesn't mean you have to lose anything. You can still do all those things AND legally drink booze. Being an adult rocks! I can stay up whenever I want, eat ice cream, drink from the milk carton, and put the water jug back in the refrigerator without refilling it. It also helps not being married. =)

Grant - Being an adult (and unmarried) has it's upside. I personally enjoy walking around the house nekkid whenever I please. I'm just saying that stuff like paying the bills gets in the way of truly enjoying summer.

You do realize your drinking from the milk carton days are over when you find your Nihon no usagi (I can't remember the word for small)???!!!

Jackt - I grew up in the country. We could ride wherever we wanted. I would have given it up the riding privileges for a pool but a beach would have been awesome.

Doc - I have that same argument now...with myself when the alarm clock goes off.

# picking up the grossest thing underneath the rock and chasing the nerdy neighbor kid with it.

I was a nerdy neighbor. I knew girls like you in school.
# reading Stephen King novels by flashlight under the covers to avoid being detected (Ok, that was probably just me)
Not Stephen King but that was just me too.

# “Mom, he’s TOUCHING me!”
Not my experience.
# homemade ice cream
Yummmm

SJ - If I recall you were the one laughing at me when I ran for my life...I think we're even now.

You were under the covers with me? lol, that explains a lot.

Your brother never did that thing where he'd point his finger a half inch from your shoulder and say "I'm not touching you...nananana"?

If you EVER make it over here we'll make homemade ice cream...even if it is the middle of winter

packing a lunch and heading off to the experimental farm for the day, a whole group of us on our bikes.

hearing the bells of the "ice cream man" who was about 15; and getting a fudgesicle for a quarter.

laying in the grass, looking at the clouds, wishing for a good wind to come up to fly the kite.

listening to the tree frogs at night.

sleeping in the orange pup tent in a friend's back yard, and having her older brother scare the crap out of us.

having a kool-aid stand and selling little glasses for 10 cents to the Dads when they came home from work, and them giving us quarters.

thanks for the memory triggers.there are so many more, but i should write my own post, um this is almost as long as one.

Rick--
we didn't get a pool til I was about 13. Prior to that, we'd play with the hose and sprinkler for hours...or go to the school's public pool.

I always loved the coppery taste of a cool drink of water from the garden hose.

I thought of another....Back when I was probably 6 or 7, Before we got Central air and the July / Aug. summer nights were so hot and unbearable....I remember the fans in our bedroom windows...and my mom powdering our sheets and backs so we wouldn't be sticky...My sister and I would lie there in our beds and listen to the fan, and the crickets, frogs..and whisper and giggle..The scent of the powder was so comforting....
